Susan Mabry, the longstanding clerk of Carroll County, on Monday was named county clerk of the year for the state by the Georgia County Clerk’s Association.
The honor comes as no surprise to those who know Mabry. Long-time friend and a co-worker for the last five years, Cissy Price said Mabry demonstrates a sincere desire to serve, and it’s evident in the way she comports herself every single day.
“She’s very deserving,” Price said. “Her number one job is to serve the public, and that’s what she does.”
Mabry has served more than 30 years with Carroll County, 20 of those as county clerk. She has served under four chairmans, 18 board members and one sole commissioner.
In her career, Mabry has completed the Certified Clerk Training Program, the County Commissioners Training Program and the Academy for AACG Leadership through the University of Georgia and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. She currently serves on the Library Board, the Parks Committee and the Judicial Center Committee, which was formed to oversee the construction of Carroll County’s new Judicial Center.
In 2005, she was recognized by the Atlanta Journal Constitution as a “Hero of Open Government” for her use of the county website in making public records available to citizens through the simple click of a mouse.
In 2009, the Carroll County Board of Commissioners recognized the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in recognition of Mabry’s personal victory over the disease. According to Jo Ann Metts, the clerk of Coffee County who presented the award to Mabry, she is an “example of hope, perseverance, strong citizenship and honest hard work to all the citizens in her county.”
Mabry said she is happy to win such an award, but the fact that she was nominated is very special in itself.
“The fact that the chairman and my peers would nominate me is something really big to me,” she said. “It means a lot.”
